Our paper argues that followers’ perceptions of ethical leadership link to organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) through moral identity. In particular, we suggest that ethical leaders influence followers’ moral identity through their actions and inner convictions, which prompts followers to act in line with their identity and thus show more OCB. We assume that leader prototypicality moderates this process, meaning that the effect of ethical leadership through followers’ moral identity on OCB is particularly strong when the leader is highly prototypical for the group. A scenario study (N = 138) in which we manipulated ethical leadership and leader prototypicality confirms our moderated mediation hypothesis. We replicate the findings in a field study of N = 225 employees, which shows that ethical leadership positively affects OCB via followers’ moral identity, but only if the leader is perceived as prototypical for the group …
