Description
The perception of places exposed to traffic noise can be affected by adding more pleasant sounds or changing visual features around. In particular water and the visibility of vegetation has been reported as ways to change pleasantness and eventfulness of urban scenes. However, most studies in this field relate to road traffic noise whereas findings potentially also affect the perception of places prone to aircraft noise. This paper presents the results of a VR experiment in which the effect of water sounds (fountains) and vegetation (trees) is tested for pleasantness, eventfulness and overall acoustic quality. The study includes a commercial and residential site in the Netherlands recorded by a 360 camera and binaural microphones.
