The ketone bodies β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and acetoacetate (AcAc) support mammalian
survival during states of energy deficit by serving as alternative sources of ATP 1. BHB levels
are elevated by starvation, caloric restriction, high-intensity exercise, or the low-
