Description
This chapter provides an overview of the overarching areas to assess when working with transgender and gender expansive children and their parents. It reviews the literature and discusses the current assessment protocols, with an emphasis on the extent to which various parent and child assessment measures align with the underlying tenets of the developing gender affirmative model. It then offers suggestions for how to move assessment beyond its historical focus on the gender dysphoria diagnosis and toward practices that can begin to tease apart gender expression from gender identity, while taking into account the influence of the gender binary for both the child and parent (s). The chapter explains a way to do this by incorporating the concepts of gender fluidity, gender literacy, and gender resiliency.
