Latitudinal gradients in species diversity: a review of concepts

The six major hypotheses of the control of species diversity are restated, examined, and
some possible tests suggested. Although several of these mechanisms could be operating
simultaneously, it is instructive to consider them separately, as this can serve to clarify our
thinking, as well as assist in the choice of the best test situations for future examination.
