Congenital toxoplasmosis has often been considered as a minor problem in countries with
low prevalence of toxoplasma antibodies (1). The high proportion of seronegative mothers,
however, increases the numbers of pregnant women at risk. The serological tests for
diagnosing toxoplasmosis in the newborn are inadequate, and since most affected children
