Abstract
We have examined how the order-disorder structural transitions associated with the “50 K anomaly” in palladium hydride (deuteride) affect the superconducting transition temperature. In PdD0.817 and PdHO.837 samples, the long-range ordering of vacancies in the H(D) sublattice leads to a 7–9% reduction in Tc. While no long range ordering occurs in a PdD0.742 sample, the enhancement of short-range order results in a 7.5% increase in Tc. In all cases the changes in Tc are reversible, the transition temperatures reverting to their original values after the samples are again disordered.
