Deep cantilever specimens representing cantilevered bridge piers were tested for the purpose of studying their structural behavior. It has been established that the strength of the tested specimens is substantially superior to the strength predicted by conventional analysis. A new design method has been proposed for longitudinal reinforcement based on principles of static equilibrium with parameters derived from testing. The shear strength of specimens was substantially greater than was anticipated from the design. An example is provided to demonstrate the proposed design method, which provides a substantial reduction in the longitudinal reinforcement of bridge pier cantilevers.(Author)
